What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct system of primary healthcare that integrates standard medical diagnostics with natural therapies. Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine receive a minimum of seven years of post-secondary education with training similar to that of medical doctors. Naturopathic Medicine is a regulated healthcare profession and doctors must complete standardized licensing examinations in order to practice.
Naturopathic therapies target the underlying cause of your condition rather than masking symptoms with pharmaceutical interventions. While managing your symptoms is very important, it’s even more important to address the underlying cause of illness. It can take more time and effort to solve the underlying problem, but ‘getting to the root’ of your condition is essential for you to truly feel better and prevent the progression of a disease process.
Naturopathic medicine complements conventional healthcare. For example, you may need to continue taking a prescription medication for a serious health condition, but this doesn’t mean that a naturopathic doctor can’t help; when safely prescribed, nutritional supplements, botanical medicines and dietary strategies can decrease medication side effects, enhance the effectiveness of drug therapy and prevent the progression of the underlying illness.
In some cases is it absolutely possible for natural therapies to replace conventional care, but working closely with a naturopathic doctor is essential to ensure the safety and effectiveness of your alternative treatment. Examples include the use of nutritional supplements, herbal medicines and lifestyle-based interventions for allergies, digestive disorders, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, arthritis, hormonal conditions, menopause, PMS, infertility, anxiety, depression, insomnia, fatigue and skin conditions.
Naturopathic doctors are trained to work in partnership with your existing healthcare team so that you may enjoy comprehensive healthcare. Naturopathic doctors will advise you to consult other healthcare providers should your needs fall outside of the scope of naturopathic practice.
Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts up to 75 minutes. During this time your naturopathic doctor gathers a detailed medical history, gains a solid understanding of your health concerns and goals for treatment, conducts a physical examination and requests laboratory evaluations that may be needed to fully assess your health concerns. Naturopathic doctors order the same blood tests as family doctors to monitor your response to therapy.
At the conclusion of your first appointment, your naturopathic doctor explains her assessment and recommends a course of action. There is plenty of time for you to ask questions about the proposed treatment plan so that you are fully aware of what to expect. After your first appointment, your naturopathic doctor will advise you of the proposed schedule for your continued care, with follow-up appointments ranging from 15 to 60 minutes.
